One day in Taormina

Sicily capsules : One day in Taormina

We are glad to share this beautiful video by Mike of My Gem Pictures about one day he spent in Taormina. Among other things, he was thrilled by:  the great views, the old city and the numerous palaces, decorated with Arabic style elements. The visit to the Greek theater is the highlight of his video. It is the second largest ancient theater in Sicily, built in the 3rd century BC.

Praised by many travelers as one of the most beautiful places in the world, a visit to Taormina should not be missed during a vacation in Sicily. All the beauties of the island are united in Taormina. The unique location of the place above the sea offers an incomparable view of the coast and Mount Etna, which smokes forever at a safe distance.

Typical Mediterranean romance fascinates vacationers from all over the world year after year. Gardens with olive and cypress trees, prickly pear cacti, fragrant jasmine, oleanders and lush bougainvillea adorn the narrow streets and the surrounding area of Taormina.

The cityscape with the main street Corso Umberto in the center has completely adapted to tourism. There are numerous restaurants and cafés in the narrow side streets that branch off from the Corso via countless steps.

VIA UMBERTO The cityscape with the main street Corso Umberto in the center has completely adapted to tourism. There are many restaurants and cafés in the narrow streets that lead down from the corso over countless steps.

PUBLIC GARDEN: It is located below the Teatro Greco in Via Bagnoli Croce. It was created at the end of the 19th century based on the English model. The park was formerly privately owned by Florence Trevelyan and extends over an area of around 3 hectares.  Paths patterned with pebbles lead through the park past olive trees, palm trees and rare trees from all over the world. Flowerbeds, which are separated from bougainvillea or rosemary by hedges, are planted with colorful Mediterranean vegetation such as hibiscus or calas.

GREEK THEATRE It is the second largest theater in Sicily after that of Syracuse. A little outside the center, it is located on a rocky plateau of Monte Tauro, surrounded by an impressive landscape.

ODEON the roman amphitheater Intended for musical and literary performances, the theater had no more than 200 people and was originally supposed to have a cover. For many centuries it remained hidden, it was accidentally rediscovered in 1893.

CATHEDRAL an example of a typical Norman-style fortress church in Sicily

NAUMACHIE The monumental succession of 18 major niches interspersed with minor rectangular niches is appreciable. All for a drop of 122m long and 5m high. There are several hypotheses on its use, there is certainly that it was not used for the representation of naval battles (contrary to its name); it was more likely a gymnasium, that is, a place to do gymnastic exercises.
